How to Calculate Net Worth: Formula, Examples, and Calculator

Key Takeaways - Net worth formula: Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities. - Assets include: Cash, bank savings, investments, property, vehicles, retirement savings, business interests, gold, and other valuables. - Liabilities include: Home loans, car loans, personal loans, credit card balances, education loans, and other outstanding debts. - Use current values: Estimate assets at their current market or resale value and use the remaining balances on loans. - Understand the result: Net worth can be positive, zero, or negative, depending on the relationship between assets and liabilities. - Net worth is not income: Salary measures earnings over time, while net worth measures your financial position at a specific point in time. - Use a calculator or Excel: Both methods can help you calculate net worth and track changes over time. - Track progress regularly: Review your net worth monthly, quarterly, or annually to identify long-term financial trends. - Improve your financial position: Build savings, reduce high-interest debt, invest according to your goals, and review major expenses. - Avoid double-counting: When including a business or property, make sure its value and associated debts are accounted for correctly.
